From Spinning to Steady

Sixteen years into my marriage, separation hit me like a truck. Being told my wife was going to file for divorce shattered me. I went from confused and unstable to completely spiraling. I wasn’t eating. I lost almost 40 pounds. I couldn’t sleep. I was overthinking everything. It felt like the end of the world.

I’ve been a Christian for a long time. I believed in God. But I didn’t truly inquire of Him.

That changed.

Instead of reacting emotionally, I began going to God intentionally. I started inquiring of Him before conversations, before decisions, even before small things like buying a gift. Like David in Scripture before going to war — I began asking instead of assuming.

And something shifted.

The situation didn’t magically fix. We’re still in an in-house separation. I still don’t know what she’s going to decide. But I’m no longer unstable.

I’m sleeping almost seven hours again. I’ve gained healthy weight back. Coworkers tell me I look 100% better. I switched jobs — took a pay cut — but gained peace. I can spend time with God throughout my day. When I walk in the house and shut my phone off, my kids run to hug me — and I’m fully present.

That’s priceless.

I used to feel double-minded and out of control. Now I feel grounded. I see how every area of life connects — faith, health, relationships, work. When one quadrant is off, it affects the others. When they align, there’s stability.

I’ve learned something powerful: My wife is a priority. My family is a goal. But God is first.

When God fills the center, everything else flows properly. When a spouse becomes the ultimate thing, instability follows. When God is ultimate, a man becomes steady.

I don’t know what the outcome of my marriage will be. I want restoration. I pray for it. But the outcome is in God’s hands.

What I do know is this:

I can walk taller. I know who I am. I am a man in process. I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I have purpose. And no matter what happens, I am becoming solid.

That alone has been life-changing.
